Penn Global Internship Program (GIP) in Buenos Aires

The Internship: Students applying to Penn GIP in Buenos Aires will have the opportunity to interview for internships in a variety of fields in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Number of Spots Available: 10

Duration: 8 weeks

Important Dates: Students must arrive in Buenos Aires for orientation on Friday, June 1, 2018.  Internships will start on Monday, June 4, 2018.  The last day of work will be Friday, July 27, 2018, and students must check out of their housing by Saturday, July 28, 2018.

The Location: Called the "Paris of South America," Buenos Aires is one of the most cosmopolitan cities of South America and has cultural offerings for everyone, ranging from myriad restaurants and historical sites to dance houses and expansive city parks.  For students, life in Argentina can be a stimulating international experience, while simultaneously seeming familiarly modern.  It offers affordable costs, easy to use public transportation, and a safe and livable atmosphere, for Spanish and non-Spanish speakers alike.  Thanks to the wealth of international and national businesses and nonprofit organizations based in Buenos Aires, the city offers plenty of engaging professional opportunities.  As the biggest Spanish-speaking country in the world, Argentina's vast territory offers a variety of easy to reach, breathtaking destinations throughout the country, from the waterfalls in Iguazú to the glaciers in Patagonia.  It is also a fantastic jumping off point to explore South America's wonders.
 

Internship Details

Students who apply to Penn GIP in Buenos Aires are applying for acceptance into the overall program.  Our on-the-ground partners will facilitate interviews between the strongest candidates and potential employers.

Eligibility

All GIP applicants must be current full-time, degree-seeking University of Pennsylvania students who are returning to their degree program full-time in the Fall semester.  All GIP applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing.

The internships with Penn GIP in Buenos Aires also require applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Eager to learn outside of the classroom
  • Enjoy creative problem solving and tackling new experiences with an open mind and an optimistic enthusiasm
  • Undergraduate students at least 18 years old at the time of application
Priority will be given to applicants who have the following criteria:
  • While Spanish knowledge is not a requirement, the more Spanish proficiency and fluency you have, the more internship options there are available to you

Please Note: Students who have participated in this program in the past OR who accepted a placement through this program in the past but then withdrew are not eligible to apply again.

Accommodation

Buenos Aires, ArgentinaOur partners in Buenos Aires will pick you up from the airport and bring you to your housing.

Housing is included in the program fee and is arranged by the staff in Buenos Aires.  You may choose to live in a homestay with a local Argentine family, in an apartment with other Penn students and/or local residents, or in a dorm with other Penn students and/or local residents.

All housing is located in the lovely and safe neighborhoods of Recoleta, Palermo, and Belgrano, with easy access to public transportation, restaurants, shops, and internship offices.  Our on-the-ground partners carefully vet each housing placements with an in-person visit to see the space and meet the point person.  In the case of homestays, all hosts are required to have experience welcoming international students into their home and must be eager to have cultural exchange with the students in order to create real immersion and a welcome setting for the students.

Students can expect a commute of 25-30 minutes on average from their housing to their internship site.
 

Money Matters

Each student accepted to Penn GIP in Buenos Aires will receive a minimum Global Internship Award of $4,075.  This award is intended to cover the full program fee*, which includes the following:
  • Internship placement/matching process for an internship in your preferred field
  • Housing in a homestay, apartment, or dorm
  • Bedding, towels, and internet access in all housing options
  • Dinner 5 days/week and breakfast 7 days/week for students living in homestays (students opting to live in apartments or dorms will not receive this)
  • Pre-departure orientation
  • In-person orientation
  • Transportation card
  • SIM card
  • 24/7 on-the-ground support

Please note: Students are still expected to pay for things not included in the program fee (see estimated budget below).

How to Apply

You may apply to Penn GIP in Buenos Aires by clicking on the button above.  Please remember that this is application into the program overall.  You may or may not be asked in January or February to interview with our on-the-ground partners and/or potential internship employers.  While you will find out if you are accepted into Penn GIP in Buenos Aires on March 1, you may or may not have your final internship offer at that time.

Our partner staff in Buenos Aires will work to ensure that every accepted student has an internship that is in their area of interest.  These staff members will speak with you one-on-one to review your goals, skills, and internship ideas.  They will help you prepare for your interviews and provide helpful strategies.  Interviews with employers will be set up by the staff member, and they will ensure that you receive an offer from an internship site.

Don't Forget:
  • You may apply to a maximum of two (2) GIP programs.  You may open your first program application by following the above instructions.  To open a second application, you must first meet with the Global Internships Manager for an advising appointment.

    **Please Note:** Due to the high interest in the "Penn GIP in..." programs, students may only apply to one "Penn GIP in..." program.  Students are also encouraged to apply for a second internship with a company in order to have the best chances of being accepted to the GIP.
