Fact Sheet:
Program Description:
The College of Arts and Sciences has the following Penn-approved options in Sub-Saharan Africa:  University of Botswana in Gaborone, Botswana, CIEE Iringa, Tanzania: Community Development, Language and Culture and CIEE Cape Town, South Africa: Arts and Sciences.  If you find that these programs do not meet your academic needs, you might consider petitioning to a non-approved program.

Don’t know where to start? The two program providers below have a number of programs in Sub-Saharan Africa that may interest you.  Their programs can serve as a launching point to your research into other study abroad programs.  Each petition will be evaluated individually to make sure that the program is appropriate for the student’s course of study and academic success. Students may look beyond this list in order to find a program that meets their academic needs. In researching programs, please keep the following criteria in mind:
  • the program’s curricular offerings must be in a field that is contained in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • a minimum of four CUs  must be transferred back to Penn; students are required to take at least one regional language course
  • an internship should not form a substantial part of the program as students will not receive academic credit

More information on the petition process can be found on the Penn Abroad website. Penn Abroad Program Managers can provide guidance to students on researching possible programs.
