Penn Global Internship Program (GIP) in Cape Town
 
Penn GIP in Cape Town LogoThe Internship: Students applying to Penn GIP in Cape Town will have the opportunity to interview for internships in a variety of fields in Cape Town, South Africa.

Duration: 8 weeks

Important Dates: Students must arrive to Cape Town by June 3, 2018 for orientation.  Internships will start the week of Monday, June 4, 2018. 

The Location: Against the backdrop of the towering Table Mountain, people from different backgrounds, religions, and ethnicities call Cape Town home.  "The Mother City," as it's sometimes known, is a proudly diverse center that serves as a commercial and industrial entry point to Africa and houses regional headquarters for many companies, nonprofits, and NGOs.  An academic internship in this multilingual, multicultural, and student-friendly environment offers the chance to experience true cross-cultural communications in a professional setting.  Outside of the office, students may appreciate the warm weather, popular beaches, dramatic mountains, and access to a vast variety of food, music, outdoor activities, and nightlife.
 

Internship Details

Students who apply to Penn GIP in Cape Town are applying for acceptance into the overall program.  Our on-the-ground partners will facilitate interviews between the strongest candidates and potential employers.

Eligibility

All GIP applicants must be current full-time, degree-seeking University of Pennsylvania students who are returning to their degree program full-time in the Fall semester.  All GIP applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing.

The internships with Penn GIP in Cape Town also require applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Students must be at least 18 years old to participate 

Please Note: Students who have participated in this program in the past OR who accepted a placement through this program in the past but then withdrew are not eligible to apply again.

Accommodation

Cape Town, South AfricaOur partners in Cape Town will pick you up from the airport and bring you to your housing.

Housing is included in the program fee and is arranged by the staff in Cape Town.  You will be placed either in an apartment with other Penn students or in a residence hall with other Penn students.

All housing is located close to universities in areas that welcome students.  The local staff in Cape Town are in close touch all building management teams in case issues arise.  Students will also receive a walking tour during their orientation to get to know their neighborhood.

Students can expect a commute of 30-45 minutes on average from their housing to their internship site.
 

Money Matters

Each student accepted to Penn GIP in Cape Town will receive a minimum Global Internship Scholarship of $4,279.  This scholarship is intended to cover the full program fee*, which includes the following:
  • Internship placement/matching process for an internship in your preferred field
  • Housing in an apartment or residence hall
  • Pre-departure orientation
  • In-person orientation
  • 24/7 on-the-ground support
  • Social and cultural programming
  • Professional development and programming
  • Excursions

Please note: Students are still expected to pay for things not included in the program fee (see estimated budget below).

How to Apply

You may apply to Penn GIP in Cape Town by clicking on the button above.  Please remember that this is application into the program overall.  You may or may not be asked in January or February to interview with our on-the-ground partners.  You will find out if you are accepted into Penn GIP in Cape Town on March 1st.

Our partner staff in Cape Town will work to ensure that every accepted student has an internship that is in their area of interest.  These staff members will speak with you one-on-one to review your goals, skills, and internship ideas.  They can review your CV/resume and cover letter, and they will provide helpful strategies for interviewing.  Interviews with employers will be set up by the staff member, and they will ensure that you receive an offer from an internship site.  Accepted students will start interviewing with employers after confirming their acceptance (by March 15th).

  • Cover Letter or Personal Statement upload
  • Unofficial transcript upload
  • Scholarship award essay

  • Other program-specific requirements, as needed
3. Once all requirements have been received and checked off, submit your application by the deadline
 
Don't Forget:
  • You may apply to a maximum of two (2) GIP programs.  You may open your first program application by following the above instructions.  To open a second application, you must first meet with the Global Internships Manager for an advising appointment.

    **Please Note:** Due to the high interest in the "Penn GIP in..." programs, students may only apply to one "Penn GIP in..." program.  Students are also encouraged to apply for a second internship with a company in order to have the best chances of being accepted to the GIP.
