Global Internship Program (GIP): Ashoka
 
Ashoka LogoThe Internship: Students interested in social media, business, and/or communications are encouraged to apply to the Mexico chapter of Ashoka, a social change organization.

Number of Spots Available: 6

Duration: 8-12 weeks

Start Date: June 1, 2018

The Organization: Ashoka builds and cultivates a community of change leaders who see that the world now requires everyone to be a changemaker.  Together, they collaborate to transform institutes and cultures worldwide so they support changemaking for the good of society.

The Location: Ashoka has its office in Mexico City, but serves as a host for all of Central America and the Caribbean.  Mexico City is the capital of Mexico, has a population of 22 million people, and is one of the biggest cities in the world.  The Ashoka office is located in the Roma Sur neighborhood, home to restaurants, parks, art, cinema, culture, etc.
 

Internship Details

There are three types of internships available with Ashoka:

1. Social Media Intern
  • Location: The interns will work at the primary work site of Ashoka
  • Number of Spots Available: 2
  • Work Hours: The interns can expect to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with one Friday off per month
  • The interns will:
    • Produce reports on social entrepreneurship, youth leadership, social affairs, the green economy, and sustainable energy to be published in magazines, newspapers, digital media, and social networks
    • Conduct interviews with social entrepreneurs
    • Write newsletters for media agencies
    • Cover events related to social entrepreneurship
    • Monitor media information on social entrepreneurship, social affairs, and youth leadership
    • Translate notes when needed
    • Generate friendly content for the blog
    • Generate, monitor, and update content for social networks with a focus on social entrepreneurship
    • Integrate and design content for the monthly newsletter
2. Finance Intern
  • Location: The interns will work at the primary work site of Ashoka
  • Number of Spots Available: 2
  • Work Hours: The interns can expect to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with one Friday off per month
  • The interns will:
    • Perform financial analysis
    • Document the flow of donations to the organization
    • Design a system that allows to check in real-time the status of donations
    • Manage international currencies
    • Review accounting information
    • Design and propose a course of finance for social entrepreneurs
3. Venture and Fellowship Intern
  • Location: The interns will work at the primary work site of Ashoka
  • Number of Spots Available: 2
  • Work Hours: The interns can expect to work 40 hours a week, Monday through Friday, with one Friday off per month
  • The interns will:
    • Search for potential Ashoka Fellows through research, contact with nominators, presence at events, etc.
    • Help revise received applications with respect to Ashoka's selection criteria
    • Be present at individual interviews with candidates
    • Organize workshops and problem-solving sessions for Ashoka Fellows
    • Monitor and analyze the Fellows' impact through evaluation questionnaires
    • Help organize networking events, such as the induction for the newly-elected Fellows

Eligibility

All GIP applicants must be current full-time, degree-seeking University of Pennsylvania students who are returning to their degree program full-time in the Fall semester.  All GIP applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing.  Additional requirements for individual internships are as follows:

1. Social Media Intern

The Social Media Internship at Ashoka also requires applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish
  • Be professional and punctual
  • Able to give suggestions and be committed, creative, and organized
  • Easy to relate to others
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Have initiative
  • Ability to work individually and with an interdisciplinary team

2. Finance Intern

The Finance Internship at Ashoka also requires applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish
  • Be professional and punctual
  • Able to give suggestions and be committed, creative, and organized
  • Easy to relate to others
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Have initiative
  • Ability to work individually and with an interdisciplinary team
  • Knowledgeable about finance, accounting, and analysis

3. Venture and Fellowship Intern

The Venture and Fellowship Internship at Ashoka also requires applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish
  • Self-motivated with an entrepreneurial ability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in an unstructured, collaborative, and creative office environment
  • Desire to cause systemic change
  • Profound qualitative analysis skills
  • Organizational skills
  • Great attention to detail

Please Note: Students who have participated in this program in the past OR who accepted a placement through this program in the past but then withdrew are not eligible to apply again.

Accommodation

Mexico City, MexicoStudents are responsible for finding their own accommodation.  Ashoka will provide interns accepted to this placement with suggestions as to where and how you can find safe, affordable, and comfortable housing close to your internship site.
 
 

Money Matters

All students accepted to the GIP will be awarded a Global Internship Program Scholarship.  GIP scholarship amounts vary by student, and award amounts are based on location of internship, length of internship, the student's need, and the student's merit. The internship placement application process includes the GIP scholarship application essay.

3. Once all requirements have been received and checked off, submit your application by the deadline
 
Don't Forget:
  • You may apply to a maximum of two (2) GIP programs.  You may open your first program application by following the above instructions.  To open a second application, you must first meet with the Global Internships Manager for an advising appointment.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to schedule your advising appointment, as appointment slots may fill!  Advising appointments will not be available from December 23rd-January 1st, so please plan ahead.
