Global Internship Program (GIP): Philadelphia Orchestra in Europe and the Middle East

The Internship: This unique opportunity is perfect for lovers of music who want the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and the Middle East with one of the world's most prominent orchestras.

Number of Spots Available: 1

Duration: 4-6 weeks

Start Date: The intern may start as early as May 1, 2018, but no later than May 15, 2018.  Travel dates can be found on the "Internship Details" tab.  The last day of the internship will be June 15, 2018.

The Organization: The Philadelphia Orchestra creates and shares music of the highest caliber for people of all ages and backgrounds.  The Orchestra is committed to excellence, innovation, and creativity, onstage and off, and serves its many communities at home and abroad by performing music, encouraging music-making, and improving the quality of life.

The Location: The intern will spend the beginning and end of the internship working with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Philadelphia, PA.  In the middle period of their internship, they will travel with the Orchestra on their tour of Europe and the Middle East, stopping in Brussels, Luxembourg, Paris, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Vienna, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem.

Internship Details

The intern at the Philadelphia Orchestra will:
  • Assist Philadelphia Orchestra staff with various events before, during, and after the Tour of Europe, including: scheduling, concert ticket assignment, supply orders, invitations, packing, follow-up communications, sponsorship events, community outreach with musicians, and VIP receptions
  • Assist with ticket fulfillment for sponsors and partners
  • Assist with post-tour wrap-up and other tasks as needed
The intern will be expected to travel with the Orchestra as it makes stops on the following dates:
  • May 24th: Brussels, Belgium
  • May 25th: Luxembourg
  • May 26th: Paris, France
  • May 27th: Dusseldorf, Germany
  • May 28th: Hamburg, Germany
  • May 29th: Hamburg, Germany
  • May 31st: Vienna, Austria
  • June 1st: Vienna, Austria
  • June 3rd: Tel Aviv, Israel
  • June 4th: Tel Aviv, Israel
  • June 5th: Jerusalem
The hours an intern works each day will vary based on the day of the tour.
 

Eligibility

All GIP applicants must be current full-time, degree-seeking University of Pennsylvania students who are returning to their degree program full-time in the Fall semester.  All GIP applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing.

The internship at the Philadelphia Orchestra also requires applicants to meet the following eligibility criteria:
  • Self-motivated
  • Organized
  • Responsible
  • Professional
  • Able to manage and complete tasks independently
     
Priority will be given to applicants who have the following criteria:
  • Experience working with musical organizations

Please Note: Students who have participated in this program in the past OR who accepted a placement through this program in the past but then withdrew are not eligible to apply again.
 

Accommodation

Brussels, BelgiumThe accepted student is responsible for finding their own accommodation while in Philadelphia, PA.  The intern's accommodation during the Tour of Europe will be arranged and paid for by the Philadelphia Orchestra.
 

Money Matters

All students accepted to the GIP will be awarded a Global Internship Program Scholarship.  GIP scholarship amounts vary by student, and award amounts are based on location of internship, length of internship, the student's need, and the student's merit. The internship placement application process includes the GIP scholarship application essay.

3. Once all requirements have been received and checked off, submit your application by the deadline
 
Don't Forget:
  • You may apply to a maximum of two (2) GIP programs.  You may open your first program application by following the above instructions.  To open a second application, you must first meet with the Global Internships Manager for an advising appointment.
  • Do not wait until the last minute to schedule your advising appointment, as appointment slots may fill!  Advising appointments will not be available from December 23rd-January 1st, so please plan ahead.
