|This cost estimate was completed on May 24, 2016 for the 2016 - 2017 academic year. These costs are approximations and are subject to change. With the exception of Penn tuition and the study abroad fee, the fees are based on those published by CIEE.
Students have the option of living in a homestay or in the student residence halls; students will be charged the same housing fee regardless of their housing selection. Students living in homestays are provided breakfast and dinner during the week and most weekends. Homestay student should budget $550 for lunches and/or meals eaten outside of the home. The $2400 meals fee applies to students living in the residence halls as no meals are provided. Personal expenses include normal spending for cultural activities and essential daily needs. The miscellaneous fee includes the out-of-pocket estimate for meals between the fall and spring semesters (approx. $900) and costs associated with onsite visa change/extension (this includes the cost of the required medical/physical exam at a designated Chinese Hospital) for academic year students or for those that do not receive a multiple entry visa or a visa to cover the duration of the program pre-departure (approx. $150).
The flight expense listed above is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from the East Coast to Shanghai. Students living outside of the East Coast or an international airport may need to arrange for a connecting flight. These are additional variable costs, to be calculated individually by the student.
CIEE requires a non-refundable deposit of $300. Penn Abroad pays this amount on behalf of Penn students as a courtesy. If the student does not participate in the program, they will be billed by the University of Pennsylvania to cover the non-refundable deposit. Additional withdrawal fees may apply depending on the date of withdrawal and CIEE's withdrawal policy.
