Exchange Rate: USD $1 = 7.79971 Hong Kong Dollar (November 13, 2017)

Lodging: Exchange students are accommodated on-campus in double occupancy student halls. Students are to note that no bed linen, pillows, blankets, etc are provided due to sanitary reasons. Students are also recommended to purchase a bed protector for the duration of their stay.

Meals: The cost of meals is based on the on-campus price of food; if you plan to eat out, you should expect to spend much more on food.

Personal Expenses: This estimate is meant to cover general expenses of college life, including additional course supplies, photocopying, toiletries, snacks, cell phone, etc. Personal expenses do not include any entertainment or vacation travel costs. This estimate includes local transportation but does not include travel outside of Hong Kong for holiday.

Additional Program Information: Penn students attending HKUST will make a lump sum, one-time payment of $10,000 HKD (~ $1281.00 USD) to cover the cost on-campus housing, the visa fee, and mandatory health insurance. The cost breakdown is as follows:
  • Housing: $8400 HKD
  • Visa Fee: $600 HKD
  • Insurance: $1000 HKD
All foreign students need a student visa to study in HK. At HKUST, student visa applications are routed to the Global Students Programs Office (GSPO) for handling. GSPO will submit all visa applications to HK Immigrations and take care of couriering it back to the students when the labels are ready.
