Notes:
This cost estimate was prepared in August 2015 for the fall 2015 semester. These costs are approximations and are subject to change. Many of the costs are estimated by CIEE, and can be found on the CIEE website.

CIEE charges a $300 nonrefundable deposit. Penn pays this amount to CIEE as a courtesy for Penn students. However, if the student decides not to enroll in the the program, they will be billed $300 by the University of Pennsylvania to cover the nonrefundable deposit.  An additional withdrawal fee may apply depending on date of withdrawal and CIEE's withdrawal policy.

Lodging with meals includes breakfast only.

Meals:  Estimation is based on students cooking the majority of their meals at their home stays and occasionally eating at restaurants.

Personal expenses:  Actual expenses will vary according to student interests and spending habits. The expense does not include personal travel.

The mandatory health insurance is a supplemental insurance required by CIEE. In addition, Penn students are required to maintain the health insurance coverage that covers them in the US.

The flight is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from New York City to Rio de Janeiro.  Students may need to arrange for a connecting flight to a New York City. Additionally, students may need to travel to a consulate to apply for and/or pick up a visa. These are additional variable costs to be calculated individually by the student.

Exchange rate: $1.00 USD = 3.58 Brazilian Real on in August 2015.
