Application Fee: Students are required to pay an application fee of $50 for this program.

Program Deposit/Confirmation Fee: CIEE charges a $300 non-refundable deposit at the time that the student commits to the study abroad program.  The University of Pennsylvania pays this amount to CIEE as a courtesy for Penn students.  However, Penn students who decide to withdraw after committing to the program will be billed $300 by the University of Pennsylvania to cover the non-refundable deposit. Additional withdrawal fees may apply depending on the date of withdrawal and CIEE’s withdrawal policy.

Meals: The cost listed above is for students living in the dormitories or in off-campus apartments. Students placed in Homestays will have breakfast and dinner provided during the week and three meals a day on weekends. Therefore, Homestay students only need to budget for lunches during the week, estimated at $600 for one semester.

Visa: Students may incur additional expenses for travel to a consulate to apply for and/or pick up a visa.

Roundtrip Flight from Gateway City: The flight expense listed above is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from a gateway city of New York to Cape Town.  However, you may depart from the city of your choice.
***Students living outside the gateway city may need to arrange for a connecting flight to a gateway city at an additional variable cost, to be calculated individually by the student.
