This cost estimate was created on April 11, 2017 for the fall 2017 semester which includes costs for the 6 week Summer Course in Japanese (SCJ) and the 3 month fall semester at ICU. These costs are subject to change.

Exchange rate: $1.00 USD= 111.22 Yen (April 11, 2017)

Lodging: Lodging expense calculated using the on-campus dormitory rate for the fall semester (51,350 Yen/month). Calculation includes 56,000 Yen dormitory admission fee for the fall semester. Calculation also includes 80,000 Yen for SCJ dormitory. Students wishing to live in a homestay, off-campus student residence or apartment should calculate total lodging expenses using the figures of this chart.  

Meals: Calculated at 60,000 Yen per month for 5 months

Local Transportation: Calculated at 8,800 Yen per month for 5 months

Personal expenses: Includes spending for cultural entertainment and essential daily needs calculated by 22,000 Yen per month.

Health Insurance: All non-Japanese students under the visa status of “Student” must join the National Health Insurance Program issued by Japanese government, which pays for 70% of medical expenses in Japan including dental treatment. With the assistance of ICU, students will enroll in and pay for the health insurance fee upon arrival.

Visa: Students may need to travel to a consulate to apply for and/or pick up a visa. These are additional variable costs, to be calculated individually by the student.

Roundtrip Flight from Gateway City: The flight expense listed above is the estimated cost of a round trip ticket from the gateway city of New York to Tokyo.  However, you may depart from the city of your choice.
***Students living outside the gateway city may need to arrange for a connecting flight to a gateway city at an additional variable cost, to be calculated individually by the student.
